Five good reasons why you should wear a mouthguard when playing sport

A custom-fitted mouthguard not only protects your teeth but can also prevent or reduce the impact of injuries to other parts of your head and jaw.  Dental injuries can result in time off school or work to recover.  They can be painful and disfiguring, and may involve length and complex dental treatment.  The cost of an injury to your teeth or jaws far exceeds the cost of a custom-fitted mouthguard.

Our emergency dental service is available to help you deal with accidents...

Five good reasons why you should wear a mouthguard when playing sport

  • Cushions teeth against impact
  • Protects against jaw joint injuries
  • Protects against soft tissue injuries
  • Helps prevent neck and jaw injuries
  • May help reduce concussion

Our dentists at Drummoyne Dental Practice are able to provide custom-fitted mouthguards.  We believe that prevention is always better than cure!

Dealing with accidents

At Drummoyne Dental Practice, we have an emergency dental service available which comes in handy when dealing with accidents.

If a tooth is cracked or chipped, you should arrange an appointment with one of our dentists as soon as possible.  Place any broken pieces of tooth in a small amount of milk (or plastic wrap if milk is unavailable) and bring them with you when you visit us.

If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not attempt to put it back in the socket.  Try to come in straight away to check if any pieces of tooth remain in the socket.  You can control bleeding by applying pressure to the injured area with a clean cloth.

If an adult tooth is knowcket out, locate the tooth and handle it with care.  If soiled, rinse the tooth in milk and try not to scrape or rub the tooth surface.  Place the tooth back in the socket in the correct orientation.  It is important to replace the tooth within 5-10 minutes of the tooth being knocked out.  If you are unable to put the tooth back into the socket, keep it moist by keeping it in a small amount of milk and see one of our dentists immediately .  Time is critical to prevent permanent damage.

The Australian Dental Association strongly recommends investing in a custom-fitted mouthguard.  Please contact us on 0291812226 if you have any further questions or would like to book in to have your mouthguard made.
