About 20% of the population suffer from bad breath (halitosis). Often the unpleasant odour is caused by bacteria which is present below the gum line and on the back of the tongue. Other causes of bad breath may be associated with disorders in the nasal cavity, sinuses, throat, lungs, oesophagus and stomach. Another possible cause of bad breath is the presence of tonsil stones (tonsilloliths). These stones form when the little pits in your tonsils become filled with bacteria and other debris.
Using a mouthrinse which specifically targets the bacteria causing the bad breath can make a dramatic difference to your breath
In rare cases, bad breath can be a symptom of a more serious underlying condition, however, in most cases the cause is minor and making some adjustments to your oral hygiene regime can improve the situation. These adjustments include:
- Presenting for a regular professional dental clean
- Brushing or gently scraping the back of the tongue
- Improving the health of the gums by using dental floss or other methods of interdental cleaning
- Using a mouthrinse which specifically targets the bacteria causing the bad breath - please ask us about the mouthrinse, as we have it available to purchase at our practice!
